Important visa information

Short-term study

You do not need a study permit if you plan to take a course or participate in a university exchange program in Canada that lasts six months or less. However there are some exceptions to this rule. For more information you should visit the Government of Canada's page about study permits.

Working while studying

As a foreign student, you may work in Canada without a work permit if:

  • You have a valid study permit for Canada, and
  • You will work on the campus of the university or college where you are registered as a full-time student in a degree-granting course of study. Your employer could be your educational institution itself or a private business located on campus.

Minimum grade requirements

Partner universities in the Canada require students to meet minimum grade requirements to be eligible for nomination. Some partner universities require a WAM average, others require a GPA - both of which can be found at the bottom of your study statement available on WES.  Please note that the grade requirements listed for the universities below are the minimum, and due to competition, students may need higher than what is stated to receive a nomination. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, please select another partner university or host country.

Bishop's University

Faculties: All
Level: Undergraduate only
Language of instruction: English
Minimum grade requirement: WAM 70
Semester dates:

  • Fall semester: early September – mid December
  • Winter semester: early January – late April

Full time study load: 15 credits per semester (5 courses)

About Bishop's University

Located in Sherbrooke, Quebec (while this is a predominantly French speaking province, the language of instruction is English), Bishop's University is a predominantly residential, undergraduate university. Their primary concern is offering students a quality education in arts, sciences, business, and education. The residential aspect and small size (2200 full time students) encourage students to immerse themselves in the complete Bishop's Experience.

The timetable will allow you to view the subjects you could study. Click on the semester (Winter, Spring/Summer or Fall), then click on the division you want to study in (i.e. business, education).

Carleton University

Faculties: All
Level: Undergraduate and postgraduate (but not postgraduate engineering students)
Language of instruction: English
Minimum grade requirement: WAM 70 p
Semester dates:

  • Fall term: early September – mid December
  • Winter term: early January – late April

Full time study load: 2.0 – 2.5 credits per semester (usually 4-5 courses)
Other: IT units at Carleton are not open to exchange students.

Carleton have an International Student Services Office to help you complete your application for exchange. Start by reading their information for incoming exchange students Here you'll find out how to apply for exchange and study permits, you can apply for on-campus residence or get their help finding off-campus housing and much more. Students should also look at the exchange student checklist. Once you've been accepted as an exchange student, they'll help you every step of the way – from explaining what to expect when you arrive in Ottawa and finding temporary accommodation, to orientation and opening a Canadian bank account.

HEC Montréal

Faculty: Business and Economics only

Full time study load: 12-15 credits per semester (4-5 courses) from the B.B.A. Program

About HEC

Situated in the bilingual and vibrant Montréal, HEC Business School is the oldest management school in Canada. HEC Montréal is an internationally renowned institution with expert faculty in all management fields and has triple-crown accreditation.

The specifics

The list of courses available for exchange students is outlined here and the course outlines descriptions can be found on the HEC course portal. Students are required to purchase health insurance from HEC Montréal during their time of study. More information about visa requirements can be found here. Students wishing to undertake courses in different languages must seek faculty approval and ensure they are proficient in their chosen language. Queen's University

It will tell you everything you need to know about insurance, where to live and how much it will cost, orientation and what to do once you arrive in Canada, course information, important dates and a critical checklist to make sure you haven't missed anything.

Monash students can take courses in the Faculty of Arts and Science, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, and the Queen's School of Business.


Simon Fraser University

Faculties: All
Level: Undergraduate only

Semester dates:Simon Fraser has a trimester calendar with three equal terms of 15 weeks.

Find out if you are eligible to attend and how to apply, discover what courses you can take at SFU (and which subjects or courses have restrictions) and how to enrol. You'll also find information about housing (on- and off-campus), student testimonials and their academic dates.

As an exchange student you can enrol in three to four different courses (units). Due to demand and space restrictions, some courses and academic programs have limited or restricted access for exchange/study abroad students. Make sure you check the restrictions and prerequisites carefully. You may be asked to provide university or high school transcripts to prove your have met these additional pre-requisites.

University of British Columbia

Faculties: All except Business & Economics and Law
Level: Undergraduate
Language of instruction: English
Minimum Grade requirement: WAM 85

Semester dates:

  • Term 1: early September - mid December
  • Term 2: early January - mid April

Full time study load: 9-15 credit units per semester (3-5 courses)

Other: Audiology and Speech Sciences, Dentistry, Film (some courses available), Journalism, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences, and Theatre (some courses available) are not open to exchange students. Monash students are advised against applying for Engineering courses due to very limited offerings. For further detailed information see the Course Information section.

About the University of British Columbia

Go Global is the unit at UBC that will support your exchange. Be sure to familiarize yourself with their website for incoming exchange students. This site will get you started with application instructions, information on mandatory health insurance, finances, accommodation and academics. There is a detailed course information page, make  sure you check the restrictions and prerequisites carefully and cross-check with the UBC course schedule. Exchange students have priority for on campus housing, which is recommended.

University of Ottawa

Faculties: Business and Economics only
Level: Undergraduate only
Language of instruction: English and French
Minimum grade requirement: WAM 70
Semester dates:

  • Fall semester: late August - late December
  • Spring semester: early January - late April

Full time study load: 12-15 credits (usually 4-5 courses). Students can only take ADM, ESL (English Second Language) or FLS (French Second Language) courses.

About the University of Ottawa

The university of Ottawa (uOttawa) is located in Canada's capital and is the largest bilingual (English-French) university in the world.  It is ranked amongst Canada's top ten research universities and offers 200 undergraduate and 185 graduate programs across ten faculties. uOttawa prides itself for having the countries' largest law school and first French immersion program so if you are interested in studying French outside of France, uOttawa might be the place for you. It is a large university with over 35,000 students offering a stimulating and diverse campus life.

Ottawa is also located on the banks of the Ottawa river near the border of the United States and it boasts the world's largest outdoor skating rink of more than 7.8 kilometres!

Telfer School of Management prides itself on being a leading international centre of management education and research. It is located within a 12 storey building which was specifically designed for teaching and learning business management. It offers a huge range of undergraduate and graduate programs from Commerce to Business Administration, Health Administration to MBA.

International exchange students are required to register to the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). This is an additional cost for students prior to leaving Australia and is irrespective of the comprehensive travel insurance provided by Monash Abroad.


University of Waterloo

York University

Faculties: All except Schulich School of Business, and law – which is run through Osgoode Hall Law School.

  • Winter semester: early January – late April

Full time study load: 15 credits per semester (usually five courses)
Other: The Schulich School of Business is not open to exchange students – meaning you cannot study any course with a code beginning in SB.

Monash students are encouraged to commence at York in Monash semester two. Semester one students need to have flexible study plans and may not get on-campus accommodation.

York University was founded in March 1959, and is now Canada's 3rd largest university and one of the leading interdisciplinary teaching and research universities in the country. Osgoode Hall Law School (York University)

Full time study load: 13-17 credits per semester (usually 4-5 courses)
Other: Monash students should have completed 96 credit points of law with an average of at least 70 per cent for entry to Osgoode Hall. Monash students can commence at Osgoode in Monash semester two only.
