Important visa information

You must obtain a student visa from the Chinese Consulate General in your home country before departing the country. You will also need a visa form from your Chinese host university confirming that you have been accepted there before you can lodge your visa application.

China University of Political Science

The specifics

China University of Political Science and Law is located in the North West of Beijing in the University district, very near to the lively student centre of Wudaokou. CUPL offers courses in both International Law and Chinese Law. There are also Chinese language courses available to students. The university offers limited on-campus accommodation and have facilities to assist students in finding off-campus housing.

Peking University

Faculties: All
Level: Undergraduate and postgraduate
Language of instruction: Chinese and some English – Monash students who want to enrol in units taught in Chinese will be required to sit a Chinese proficiency test after they arrive.
Note: Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, with valid passport, above the age of 18, and should abide by Chinese law and the regulations of Peking University. They should also respect Chinese social customs.
Minimum grade requirement: WAM 60
Semester dates:

  • Semester one: early September – mid January
  • Semester two: late February – early June

Full time study load: 15-20 credits per semester (usually 5-6 courses)
Enrolment procedure: Exchange students can only enrol in their units after they arrive at Peking University – you should choose more than the minimum number of units for approval by your faculty before leaving your home country in case some classes are already full.
Other: Undergraduate exchange students are called "general visiting students" and postgraduate "senior visiting students".

About Peking University

Peking University is a comprehensive and national key university. The campus, known as "Yan Yuan" (the garden of Yan), is situated at Haidian District in the western suburb of Beijing. It stands near to the Yuanmingyuan Garden and the Summer Palace.

About Tsinghua University

Tsinghua University is located in the Haidian District, Beijing, Tsinghua University Park. Its predecessor was the Tsinghua School was founded in 1911. The tree-lined campus, beautiful environment, different periods of architectural form with all the style of building community, "Tsinghua" spread the long. In December 1950, fourteen students from Eastern Europe were enrolled into Tsinghua, and it was the first time for the universities of new China to accept foreign students. In the past six decades, Tsinghua University has enrolled a total of over 20,000 international students.

The specifics

Tsinghua University currently offers more than 10 masters programs in English for international students. The International MBA Program, offered through their School of Economics and Management, is one of these.

Nanjing University

Language of Instruction: Chinese and English (Note: while there are a limited range of programs taught in English, these may vary by semester). If exchange students have passed HSK level 5, they may enrol in Chinese-taught courses.
Minimum grade requirement: WAM 60

Full-time study load: The maximum requirement for each semester is 4 courses. Exchange students normally take Chinese-language training courses and English taught courses.

About Nanjing University

Nanjing University is one of China's oldest universities, having been founded in 1902, and has seen a range of transformations linked with the country's rich cultural history. The Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China runs the Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE), which helps facilitate study abroad programs in China. About Fudan University

Fudan, literally translates into "(heavenly light shines) day after day". As one of the most prestigious and most selective universities in China, it is a member of both the Chinese C9 (an alliance of nine prestigious Chinese universities) and internationally renowned Universitas 21. Fudan is ranked 90th in the QS International University Rankings in 2012. Fudan was one of the first Chinese universities to open their doors to international students, beginning in the 1950s, and has since enrolled over 10 000 international students from over 100 countries.
Fudan has four campuses, in a "one body, two wings" structure, in which the body is the Handan and Jiangwan campuses, which are only about 3km apart, and the two wings are Fenglin and Zhangjian campuses.

The Specifics

Harbin Institute of Technology

About Harbin Institute of Technology

Also known as HIT, Harbin (located in North East China) was established in 1920 as an engineering school to support China's developing infrastructure. Harbin has gone on to continue this tradition, and its core strengths lie in engineering technology, scientific research and astronautics. However, HIT has since developed twenty schools to include Humanities, Social Science and Management. In addition to a long list of achievements, the university has also been China's proud developer of the first simulation computer, intelligent chess playing robot, iron welding robot and was the first Chinese university to develop and launch a satellite.

The Specifics

For undergraduates the majority of courses, with the exception of Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering and Technique, are taught only in Chinese. However, the Masters programs offer a more comprehensive list and extend into the School of Economy and Management. Sun Yat-Sen University

About Sun Yat-Sen University

Sun Yat-Sen is located in Guangzhou, the capital city of the Guangdong province – located near the banks of the Pearl River. Originally Guangdong University, Sun Yat-Sen was founded in 1924 by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a 20th century Chinese, democratic revolutionary leader. Sun Yat-Sen's motto, "study extensively; enquire accurately; reflect carefully; discriminate clearly; practise earnestly" comes from the Confucian classic, Doctrine of the Mean. There are currently over 36 000 students at Sun Yat-Sen, including almost 1600 international students.

Students can choose to live on-campus in the International Student's dormitory – each room is furnished and has its own bathroom, telephone and air-condition, and has access to a gym, public washing machines and recreation rooms.

About University of Science and Technology China

Located in Hefei, in the East of China, the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), is a member of C9 and an innovative leader in Nano science and technology, quantum science, life science, fire science and protection technology, polar scientific investigation and research as well as bio-mass clean energy research. There are four main campuses: North, South, East and West, which are connected by shuttle buses provided free of charge for students between the hours of 7am and 11pm.  Set in the middle of the highly urbanised Hefei, the USTC campus is an oasis, adorned in native trees and plants.

The Specifics

The International Affairs Office oversees all international students enrolling at USTC, located in International Guest House, East campus, near the North gate (note: the website is not yet available in English, however you may be able to use Google Translator). See the pre-departure guide for any details you might need about visas and entering China.
There are only a very limited number of on-campus accommodation options available for international students, and preference is given to those with a Chinese Government Scholarship. However, if you go to the Guest House in the East Campus, they will assist you finding off campus accommodation. Here they can also help you set up a bank account, sort out your visa and register you for a mandatory health check.

Xi'an Jiaotong University

Language of Instruction: Chinese and English (Master's only)

About Xi'an Jiaotong University

With a history reaching back over 3000 years, Xi'an is considered as the cradle of Chinese history, culture and civilisation, and as one of the great ancient cities of the world, alongside Rome, Istanbul and Athens. Today, Xi'an is retains its strong historical legacy, but is also an industrial, educational and industrial centre, and serves as a gateway between the North-West region and the rest of the country. The university campus is within close proximity to some of China's most significant historical and cultural attractions such as the Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses, the Xi'an City Wall and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.

Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) offers programs a broad range of schools, however specialises in innovative science technology and engineering, and has nine academics with membership to the National Academy of Sciences and twelve members of the National Academy of Engineering--among whom twelve are members of both. XJTU is part of the C9 group.

Accommodation for international students is offered on a first-in-first-served basis, and is equipped with a telephone, TV, air-conditioner, heating system, furniture, beds and bedding, and has a variety of restaurants and food options nearby. XJTU also boasts state-of-art sporting facilities with a running track, tennis courts, open basketball court, volleyball and badminton courts and table tennis facilities.

About Zhejiang University

Located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, about 180 km southwest of Shanghai near the East coast of China; the city sits at the southern end of the Grand Canal of China, and Yangtze River. Zhejiang University was founded in 1897 as the Qiushi Academy and has since developed into one of China's leading science and technology institutions and a member of the C9. Zhejiang has since had more than 160 alumni elected as members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. Zhejiang is also famous for its comprehensive library collection, containing over 6.9 million volumes.
In 1979 the university opened its doors to international students and since over 25,000 visiting scholars have taken the opportunity to visit this unique university.
There are five campuses all located in Hangzhou, all of which can be visited on a picturesque walking tour of the university.

The Specifics

On campus accommodation is provided for students, which are outfitted with three student dining halls. Meals can be paid with using a pre-paid dining card, and meals are served in an a la carte manner. The International Office is located around the main campuses, and can help you with any important information you might need.
