While it's likely that you'll be getting some support through your Monash Abroad Travel Scholarship – it may not cover the full cost of your study exchange.
The good news is that it's possible to hold more than one scholarship, bursary or grant at a time – so it's a good idea to research all the different kinds of funding available to you.
Monash University Travel Funding
Monash wants to make sure that money is not a barrier to your participation in an overseas experience. We provide lots of information on funding opportunities available to students traveling overseas for study or placements.
For more information, please visit Travel and placement scholarships organised by Coursework Scholarships Unit.
Other External Funding
The Mangold Trust Language Scholarships are travel awards for advanced tertiary language students currently attending a university in Victoria who apply for an exchange or study abroad placement to continue their language studies overseas for at least one semester.
The scholarship funds contribute towards reasonable travel and living costs while the recipients are enrolled full-time at an approved overseas institution to study an accredited language and cultural program for one or two semesters (the minimum enrolment period is 12 weeks).
Advanced students of all modern languages are eligible to apply.
Applications for awards for language study abroad or exchange programs commencing in 2017 have closed.
The next application round, for exchange and study abroad enrolments commencing in the first half of 2018, will open in July 2017.

Australian Government grants
International Student Exchange Program Grant
To encourage Australian students to undertake study, research and professional development overseas, the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education created Endeavour Awards.
Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government's internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for students to study at specific partners or in particular regions, with a view to nurture and develop on-going educational, research and professional linkages. An International Student Exchange Program Grant is one of these awards.
The target countries change each year, and the grants are worth A$5000.
To be eligible for an International Student Exchange Program grant you must:
- be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- be enrolled in an undergraduate course at Monash
- be selected by Monash to go on exchange to one of Monash's exchange partners for at least one semester
- not be in receipt of any other Monash travel grant, Japanese Government scholarship, DAAD or other significant financial support from Monash University
- not have previously received an Australian Government Endeavour Grant.
You'll be automatically considered for the grant if accepted into an exchange with a partner who falls into the target region for that year.
Grants are awarded on the basis of academic merit and you'll be notified if you're successful as soon as all exchange students have received offers from the partner universities.
The Hamer Scholarships Program
The Victorian Government has established Hamer Scholarships to support language study at sponsored universities in China, Indonesia, Korea and Japan. Scholarships amounts are between $10,000 - $15,000.
While Centrelink don't actually offer grants, it is possible for you to continue receiving your Australian Youth Allowance payments while on exchange. You'll need to obtain a request letter from your faculty – speak to them directly about this.
Exchange partner scholarships and grants
Many of our exchange partners and foreign government bodies offer scholarships and grants to encourage you to choose them as your study abroad destination.
The eligibility requirements, conditions and application details differ between each, so make sure you read the fine print.
