About the program View
The Global Intercampus Program (GIP) lets you undertake one or two semesters of study towards your degree at Monash University Malaysia campus.
As you're already a Monash student, spending time studying at another Monash campus is one of the easiest ways to see the world. This is the perfect choice if you are seeking a stimulating overseas experience that will add value to your degree, with the added benefit of Monash funding packages and in-country support services.
How does it work?
If you believe you meet the eligibility requirements to participate in the Global Intercampus Program (see tab below), you can apply.
While abroad you’ll:
- remain enrolled at your home Monash campus;
- pay your normal fees at your home Monash campus; and
- undertake units that will transfer directly to your home degree and appear on your Monash transcript.
Studying at Monash Malaysia
Monash Malaysia is Monash University's first international campus, located 18 kilometres from the bustling centre of Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia has a vibrant, global atmosphere and on campus about one quarter of the student body is international.
Monash Malaysia makes available a wide-ranging selection of units, all taught in English, including regionally based research projects, study tours and fieldwork opportunities. Units align with the campus’s research priorities and include social and economic transformation, sustainability and the environment.
Monash Malaysia also offers a summer school program through their School of Business, School of Science and School of Information Technology. But you don't need to be a student of these faculties to apply - any student can apply.

#Faculty/Campus Requirements for Monash Australia students
- Bachelor of Engineering (single or double degree) students must have completed 48 credit points of Engineering units at time of application. Not all Engineering specialisations are available at Monash Malaysia. Please seek faculty advice.
- Bachelor of Law double degree students must have completed 36 credits by time of program commencement. Law is not offered for semester-length exchange, however the Law Faculty runs the Monash Law Malaysia Program - find out more here.
- Some faculties may not permit you to undertake overseas study in the final semester of your course. Check with your faculty before completing this application.
Other factors to consider
- Due to immigration limitations in Malaysia, you are unable to extend your intercampus exchange from one semester to two. If you are considering a two-semester exchange, please indicate this at time of application. You can then subsequently withdraw and return to Australia after one semester if you wish.

What can I study?
Monash Malaysia offers a wide selection of units for you to study. While unit syllabuses are similar across all Monash campuses, you will find that Monash Malaysia offers localised units providing a unique exchange experience here.
Popular localised units that are offered at Monash Malaysia include, Malaysian Studies, Contemporary Feminism in Asia, Media, Power and Reporting in Southeast Asia from the School of Arts and Social Sciences. Other interesting units include Environmental Science: A Southeast Asian Perspective offered at the School of Science as well as Leadership in Asia, Business in Asia and Islamic Marketing offered at the School of Business.
For language enthusiasts, the Malay Language is a non-credit earning unit, ideal for those who wish to learn the local language during their exchange in Malaysia. Find out more about your study options at Monash University Malaysia.
Study areas available
While it may make more sense to study subjects in line with your majors and minors back home, you may be allowed to choose subjects from another Monash faculty/school – and Monash Malaysia has 7 of those to choose from:
- Arts and Social Sciences
- Business and Economics
- Engineering
- Information Technology
- Psychology
- Pharmacy
- Science
If you're studying a Bachelor of Pharmacy you can do a one-semester intercampus exchange between the Malaysian and Parkville campuses (Monash Australia students only). You can only go in the second semester of second year or the first semester of third year. Places are limited and you must have a credit average (60 per cent or above) across all completed units to be considered.
Student handbooks and unit descriptions
By searching our handbook catalogue for units offered at Monash Malaysia, you'll find all the available units for the year at the Malaysia Campus. In each unit's handbook entry, you'll find:
- unit code
- faculty
- credit points
- study hours
- semester(s) offered
- any prerequisites
- a description of what you'll study
- assessment requirements.

Monash Malaysia Summer Program
Monash Malaysia offers a Summer Program, much like a Faculty Overseas Program, through their School of Science and School of Information Technology. You don't need to be a student of these faculties to be considered - any student can apply. Click through to the Science or IT faculty website for their Summer Program offerings and how to apply. Contact Monash Abroad if you have any queries about the program.
Funding and pre-arrival information View
As a global intercampus program student, you don't pay any additional tuition fees. However, your living and travel costs aren't included in your fees, so you'll need to budget for them.
You should ensure that you have enough money to cover you for the length of time you plan to be away, including costs like your return airfare, travel insurance, visas, accommodation, food, text books, sightseeing, entertainment and any extra travel you plan to do.
Fortunately, there are many different scholarship, grant and loan options to help you experience your Global Intercampus Program sooner – and more affordably.
Monash Abroad Travel Grant
Studying intercampus at the Monash Malaysia campus comes with the Monash Abroad Travel Grant of $2500 to make your intercampus exchange cost effective and worry free.
Scholarships
It's possible to hold more than one scholarship, bursary or grant at a time, so checking out all of the funding opportunities available to you is a good idea. Find out more about other scholarships here.
Loans
Students can take out an OS-HELP loan to help fund their time away on exchange – it works just the same as a bank loan, but without any fees or interest, and is much more affordable.
Find out more about OS-HELP loans here.
Visas
Before travelling to Malaysia, you'll need to arrange a student visa. You will be provided with guidance on how to apply for your visa before you depart.
Health insurance
Under Malaysian visa rules, international students (with some exceptions) must have basic medical and hospital cover before they can apply for a student visa.
The names and levels of cover differ depending on where you'll be studying, and for how long. You will be provided with guidance and options to consider for health insurance by the Monash Malaysia team.
Travel insurance
While your overseas student health cover will insure you once you arrive at Monash, it doesn't cover you for things like flight cancellations and lost baggage/personal items. For this reason we strongly encourage you to take out comprehensive travel insurance before you leave home.
If you're from one of our Australian campuses you'll receive complimentary travel insurance as part of the Monash Abroad Travel Scholarship. Find out more here.

Ready to apply?
Step 1: Create an application for the Global Intercampus Program online
You will need to create an online application to apply for study at Monash Malaysia. The online application form is accessed by following the link here, and clicking the 'How to apply' tab. The application should take about 30 minutes to complete.
You will need to upload the details page of your passport (it should have at least 18 months at the start Week 1 in the semester you are studying at Monash Malaysia before it expires).
You will also be required to prepare a financial plan, as well as a study plan of units you want to undertake at Monash Malaysia.
Step 2: Preparing your study plan
Your study plan is the list of units you plan to study while on the Global Intercampus Program, and forms part of your application. You can download the worksheet (either as a PDF or Word document) to gather the information you'll need to complete the online study plan form.
Use the Handbook to find and select the units that you wish to study at the Malaysia campus.
You will need the following information for the study plan:
- Unit Code and Name: check that the unit is being offered in Malaysia before listing this.
- Unit credit points
- Link to unit outline in the Handbook.
- Credit: list the faculty at Monash Australia who teaches the degree to which you want this unit to count. Your Faculty will be assessing the units you have selected in the GIP study plan.
- Credit this unit as: list what type of credit you want this unit to count as (e.g. core unit, major/specialisation, minor, technical/degree elective or free elective). This is especially important if you are enrolled in a degree made of different types of units such as elective, major, technical or core units. Ensure you know your course progression requirements. Your faculty/ies will assess the units you have selected and will provide an outcome within a few weeks of the closing date of application.
You must enrol in a full-time load (18 – 24 credit points) of on-campus units only. You should select at least two spare units in case your faculty/ies does/do not approve all your choices or there are timetable clashes.
What next?
Once your application is submitted, we begin the assessment process with your faculty/ies. Once approved, we will inform you on the next steps, which include a pre-departure information session covering topics such as accommodation and visas.
