A PhD offered in Music Composition takes the form of the Monash Doctoral Program – a PhD for the 21st century. At the core of the program is an extensive, independent research project on an agreed topic, supported by a minimum of two expert academic supervisors. This is enhanced by professional development activities or coursework units that provide you with the skills required to make an impact in academia, industry, government or the wider community.

The PhD (Music Composition) supports research excellence spanning early music styles to improvisation and real-time machine music.

Course Handbook

This course is designed for composers to develop a research-based composition folio that makes an independent and original contribution to knowledge.

Your degree will consist of three components, supported by a minimum of two expert academic supervisors:

  • Practical (creative work) component
  • Research and exegesis
  • Professional development

Practical component

Your creative practical component will consist of creating a composition folio including both musical scores and sound recordings. The overall duration of the submitted music should be between 50 and 80 minutes depending on the complexity of the submitted music.

Research and exegesis

Together with your folio of music compositions, you will submit a thesis between 20,000 and 25,000 words that demonstrates your capacity to articulate the conceptual and aesthetic basis of your folio of compositions.

All applicants must be able to demonstrate a capacity to carry out independent research and have adequate training and ability to pursue the proposed course of study.

You may apply to transfer from another Monash course. Transfers are a competitive process. You may apply mid-year for available courses however consideration will be given as to whether you will be able to follow your course progression.

Fees

Research Training Program (RTP)

This course is supported by the Australian government's Research Training Program (RTP). Under the RTP, domestic students are awarded an RTP Fees Offset which exempts them from tuition fees for the normal duration of the course. This exemption is valid for up to four years for students enrolled in a doctoral program and up to two years for a research master's degree.
