Entry Requirements

You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.

Minimum Entry Requirements (Domestic students)


An Australian undergraduate degree with at least a credit (60%) average (or qualification deemed by the faculty to be a satisfactory equivalent), in a discipline relating to one of IT, business (with mathematics), Economics, Econometrics, Engineering, or Science degree with completed studies in at least one of mathematics, programming or databases.


An Australian bachelor's degree (or a qualification deemed by the faculty to be a satisfactory equivalent) with at least a credit (60%) average; plus two years of professional work experience in programming or databases.

English requirements

Applicants must also meet the English language requirements.

This course consists of eight graduate-level units. You complete core studies in introductory data science, statistical and exploratory analysis, data formats and processing and then select units from across a range of areas where you can tailor the course to suit your own interests.  Your choice of units covers studies in data exploration and visualisation, distributed and big data processing and data analysis and data management.

Progression map: Graduate Diploma of Data Science

This course is offered via the Monash Online delivery model, which is based on six teaching periods (6 weeks each, with approx. 2 weeks break between each) each year. Students take one unit at most each teaching period. The units in the Graduate Diploma of Data Science are offered in two so-called carousels. Carousel 1 consists of the 3 core units FIT5145, FIT5196 and FIT5197, with the remaining six units offered in the second carousel. There are no pre-requisites between units within the same carousel, so students can commence the course in each teaching period. The standard progression map is that students will complete Carousel 1 before commencing Carousel 2.

Fees are per 48 credit points which represents a standard full-time course load for a year.
