The Master of Health Administration comprises units across multiple Monash faculties, combining to deliver a comprehensive course producing confident leaders in the healthcare sector. You’ll cover managerial practices in the context of health care, and undertake study in the evaluation and development of heath policy and systems, in addition to epidemiology and biostatistics.

Purposeful unit selection ensures you complete important foundational study in management and leadership, developing the knowledge and skills to bring about impactful change in health care.

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements (Domestic students)

You need to satisfy all of the following requirements to be considered for entry into this course.


An Australian undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline including health science, business, commerce, economics or law, or qualification/ experience or satisfactory substitute that the faculty considers to be equivalent.


A minimum of one to two years industry/management experience.

English requirements

Applicants must also meet the English language requirements.

The course is structured in 12 units.

You will gain knowledge and skills in a broad range of areas that are relevant to management work in general health care administration and public health.

You will develop an understanding of the management within health care and public health organisations, basic accounting principles, use of economic tools, marketing, national health systems and health policy theory and development, biostatistics as applied to public health and management studies, key concepts of epidemiology, legal principles related to health care, health systems and health sector reforms, quantitative and qualitative research methods used in public health and improving the quality of care and patient safety.

The course adopts an adult learning approach, encouraging self-directed learning independent research and enquiry, reflection from practice, and peer learning with guidance from experienced academics in their respective fields.

You have the option to work towards the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrator's Fellowship, as the course is accredited by the Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM).

Alternative qualifications

You may be eligible to exit your course early and apply to graduate with one of the following qualifications, provided you have met the requirements for the qualification during your enrolment in the Masters course:

  • Graduate Certificate in Health Administration: you’ll need to complete a total of 24 credit points (6 months full time study), with a minimum of 18 credit points at level 4 or above.
  • Graduate Diploma in Health Administration: you’ll need to complete a total of 48 credit points (1 year full time study), with a minimum of 36 credit points at level 4 or above.

If you decide to graduate early, you will need to discontinue from the Masters course. You may be eligible to receive credit for the units you have completed if you re-apply and are re-admitted to this course or apply for another graduate degree at Monash University.
