Diploma of Art and Design

Study the Diploma if you:

  • are interested in a career in art, design or architecture
  • would like to study subjects that directly relate to your future degree
  • would like to learn a range of creative art and design skills
  • would like to develop a folio of creative work.

A Monash College Diploma of Art and Design provides a pathway into first or second year at Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA).*

Select a stream depending on your career goals and in part 2 of your diploma you will study the same subjects as first-year students in Architecture, Fine Art or Design degrees.

We work with MADA's academic staff to make sure you gain the confidence and skills to prepare you for entry into the University.

Entry Requirements

You need to satisfy the following entrance requirements to be considered for entry to this course.

Minimum Entry Requirements (International students)


To be accepted into a Monash College Diploma, you must meet the academic and English language requirements. You will also need to check the age, subject and folio requirements before you apply.

Prerequisite subjects

You must meet the additional course prerequisite subjects which are equivalent to Australian Year 11 (part 1) or Australian Year 12 (part 2).

To enter directly into part 2 of the Fine Arts Stream, you will need a folio of creative work. If you do not have a folio you may be offered a place in part 1.

Minimum age requirements

Part 1: 16 years

Part 2: 17 years

If you do not meet the age requirements, you may be offered a deferred place.

English entry requirements

Diploma Part 1
IELTS: 5.5 overall (no band lower than 5.0) TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 52 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 15, Listening: 5, Reading: 5 and Speaking: 14 Equivalent approved English test

Diploma Part 2
IELTS: 6.0 overall (Writing not less than 6.0) TOEFL Internet-based test: score of 69 overall with minimum scores: Writing: 21 Equivalent approved English test

Enrolment Obligations

International students enrolling in a CRICOS-registered course can study no more than one third (33%) of their course by distance and/or online learning. Students must enrol in at least one unit that is not by distance and/or online in each compulsory study period unless the student is completing the last unit of their course. See standard 8.19 and 8.20 of National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018.
