Simultaneous Interpreting - PDA1022
This PD short course is an introduction to simultaneous interpreting and is intended for experienced and certified/accredited spoken language interpreters only. Simultaneous interpreting is widely used at international conferences and meetings, during business and diplomatic assignments, in courts and tribunals, and increasingly in other community settings.
This course is taught by a NAATI certified conference interpreter, and introduces the concepts of split attention, self-monitoring, Ear-Voice-Span (EVS), coordination, deverbalisation, reformulation and coping techniques, and provides exercises on these. Course participants will practice simultaneous interpreting in booths or in chuchotage and provide simultaneous interpretation of speeches mainly from English into their LOTE.
The course will culminate in a mock conference activity, giving participants the opportunity to practice their new skills in a realistic context and receive direct feedback on their performance. This feedback will be limited to simultaneous interpreting skills. No language-specific feedback will be provided.
