For film buffs and film-industry aspirants alike, Film and screen studies provides a fascinating opportunity to critically engage with contemporary and historical practices of cinema and television theory and criticism, and related video and new screen technologies.

A host of electives let you view, and review, society and culture. Develop expertise in documentary, journalism and international cinema, with a chance to study Italian film in Italy.

You'll gain a solid background on the history and theory of moving-image media, and its context in society. You will be expected to look with a sharp eye at the way media is developing, considering contemporary film and television, and film in the digital era.

Through a global approach to film study, you will delve into Australian, Asian, French, Italian and Spanish cinema. You will consider earlier and contemporary popular Hollywood and its institutions, alternative film and video, documentary film, Australian television, popular television genres, online screen forms, and video practice.

What better way to contextualise your studies than to visit a film industry's country of origin? You can explore other cultures with units in film and screen studies offered at our Malaysia Sunway campus, discover Italian cinema or analyse international aspects of Australian cinema at our centre in Prato, Italy.

Why not combine your film studies with another field of interest. A view of a society or historical event through the moving image, for example, will deepen your understanding of history or sociology studies.

Important transferable skills are gained during the course, including critical engagement, analysis, research and writing, giving you a broad basis from which to choose your career path.

As a graduate, you will be in a position to explore careers in film and television production; criticism and reviewing; film distribution and marketing; film exhibition; television networks; film and screen archives; and film festivals.
