Our Jewish studies program will equip you with an understanding of Jewish civilisation in its many dimensions – language and literature, history, theology, philosophy, rabbinics, law, politics and sociology. A foundation in Jewish Studies will complement majors such as History, International Relations, Sociology or Religious Studies.

Broaden your horizons and take your studies overseas, with units offered in Italy and South Africa.

Monash University is home to the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation, a world-class research centre for the study of the cultures, literatures, politics and histories of Jewish civilisation.

Providing you with the foundations of Jewish history, core units cover the social, cultural, political and economic interactions of Jews with Christians and Muslims from antiquity to the Enlightenment. You will retrace the shifting relationships between the three monotheistic traditions.

This will be followed by study of Jewish society from the eighteenth century to the opening decades of the twentieth century.

A fascinating and challenging range of electives covering topics such as holocaust and genocide, conflict resolution, Arab-Israeli conflict, and race and class will bring greater depth and insight to your studies.

You might also choose to complement Jewish Studies with Yiddish language studies, where you'll progress through an integrated sequence of units exploring the language, literature and culture of the Yiddish world, including texts from Australia.

A fascinating complement to Jewish studies, Literary studies, History, Philosophy and other humanistic disciplines, Yiddish language studies will give you solid skills in written and conversational Yiddish and a critical appreciation of the work of major Yiddish authors.
