If performance is your passion, or if you're focused on a career in the arts, Theatre at Monash will set you on the right path.

With a challenging blend of the theoretical and the practical, Theatre provides the opportunity for hands-on learning with experts in the field taking advantage of world-class facilities.

Studies are offered through the Centre for Theatre and Performance, which boasts one of the most comprehensive theatre programs in the country. You'll be encouraged to take advantage of the strong links between the Centre and the Australian performing-arts industry.

Theatre at Monash addresses both the making and the analysis of theatre and performance. A diverse range of units will give you a comprehensive grounding in academic approaches to theatre and performance, including theatre histories, the social and cultural contexts of different traditions of performance, and theories of the Western theatre spanning more than 2500 years.

Electives offer the opportunity to explore musicals and specific national theatre traditions, or to develop your practical skills as a performer, scriptwriter or director. You'll gain comprehensive knowledge of theatre practices, history and theory, and come away with an excellent understanding of the social role and context of theatre, along with strong familiarity of the local theatre industry.

You will benefit from intensive practical experience in the Music Theatre Workshop – in which you'll produce and stage a full piece of musical theatre – or an industry placement with the Malthouse or another of the many theatre companies, festivals and programs with which Monash enjoys a unique and important relationship.

Your expertise will open up a range of creative career paths, including performance, arts journalism, theatre production, arts management and teaching.
