Through Chinese studies you can become a competent communicator in the Chinese (Mandarin) language while developing a rich insight into the culture, history and politics of the world's 'next superpower'.
With different entry points for beginner, intermediate and proficient speakers of Mandarin, including a translation stream for proficient speakers, this major will extend your capabilities for what may well turn out to be the 'Chinese Century'. You will develop the research and language skills required to facilitate the use of the Chinese-language internet, connecting you to Chinese and international current affairs.
You can also experience the culture first hand through overseas study in China, Hong Kong or Taiwan.
Whether you're a proficient Mandarin speaker or a passionate beginner, you'll take a mix of language and Chinese-media and -culture units, and will emerge proficient in written and spoken Mandarin. If you're already proficient, you will take more advanced Chinese Studies subjects, including the option of developing invaluable translation skills.
If you enjoy Chinese Studies so much that you're drawn to the extended major, you'll be presented with a whole range of electives, covering Chinese and Asian history, business translation and Asian media. You'll also have the opportunity to undertake an internship in a Chinese-language organisation.
Studying a language gives you more than the language. It offers you the unique opportunity to truly learn intercultural communication and to think broadly as you learn first hand about linguistic and cultural differences. It will challenge you to learn more about your own language and culture.
Whatever your end goal, a semester-length International Program or Intensive Language Program in China provides an excellent opportunity to cement your language skills and really get to know the country and its people.
You'll emerge fluent in Mandarin, well versed in modern Chinese culture, and with the foundations for a career in media, translation, foreign affairs or international trade.
