Your qualification will be a Bachelor of Industrial Design
Create beautiful, functional objects by combining your knowledge of materials, manufacturing, and human-centred design with innovation and aesthetics.
You’ll learn how to develop innovative solutions to design challenges for systems and services like transport and mobility, furniture and lighting design, to medical equipment and all kinds of products.
Guided by our talented academics, practicing industrial designers and top researchers, you’ll learn how to use design as a problem-solving tool in hands-on, practical studios to transform your ideas into functional prototypes.
Year 1: In the Industrial Design studio, you’ll be introduced to the fundamental principles of understanding and controlling 3D form, and the relationship between producer and manufacturer. You’ll explore the basics of modelling and industry-standard software.
Year 2: This is your year to explore. In the studio, you’ll explore the person/product interface, and discover how to improve your designs by considering how humans move and think.
The entire second semester of second year is electives – choose from hundreds of units on offer from across the University, or undertake an internship with a local design agency. Alternatively, you can undertake an approved semester exchange or spend it at the Monash Prato Centre studying design in Europe.
Year 3: In your final year, you’ll develop your own project from concept to prototype. You’ll look at market need, test concepts, develop product specifications, explore manufacturing techniques and create a prototype of your design to present at our end-of-year exhibition of graduate work.
Your third year culminates in our annual graduate exhibition MADA Now, where you’ll exhibit your work to friends, family and industry.
Innovate, improve and enhance the products, systems and services we use every day.
“Good design is more than making something look good. My lecturers were always challenging my assumptions of design – why something looks a certain way, or works a certain way or even why it exists.”
