You will develop a deeper understanding of the interconnections between different languages and cultures, and their global impact over time. The major is structured around three entry points: beginners, intermediate and proficient. An extended major will be available to students who want to reach proficient level in two European languages.
There is a growing need for professionals with not only excellent language skills, but also intercultural literacy, and a real ability to communicate and translate across languages, cultures and societies. We provide you with an understanding of European languages within a global cultural context, and knowledge and skills that are applicable to a great variety of careers in business, government, non-government organisations, education, communication, and the cultural sector.
Through the study of language, literature, history, film, arts, and popular culture, you will be exposed to some of the most influential ideas that have shaped our world, and also the new ideas that are challenging the status quo and imagining a new, sustainable and just world. You will also be able to immerse yourself in the language with opportunities for study abroad and internships in Europe, Latin America and New Caledonia.

The Monash Arts Global Immersion Guarantee (GIG) is an award-winning initiative that will enable you to explore first-hand the relationships between society, technology and the environment. It’s a two-week, funded study trip for all eligible first-year Monash Arts, single or double degree students to one of six destinations – China, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia or the Pacific Islands.
