About film and screen studies

We look at historical, textual and critical approaches to film and screen. Studies cover Australian, Asian and European cinemas, Hollywood and its institutions, gender in film and TV, documentary film, Australian television, popular television genres, online screen forms and video practice.

Why study film and screen?

You’ll develop advanced critical and writing skills, and build skills in using audio-visual technologies to convey ideas. You’ll be able to understand and apply screen theory, critically engage with cinema practices, and be able to interpret forms of film and television within the context of digital culture. You’ll produce traditional essays as well as different forms of media, such as audio-visual essays and audio commentaries.

Screen industries, technologies and cultures are changing faster than ever before.

Learn how to navigate this rapidly transforming environment. What are the social and technological factors that control the screen media we consume? How is our understanding of the issues at stake in movements like Black Lives Matter and #metoo shaped by what we see on screens? How can film and television histories help us understand the movement of audio-visual materials online?

• Australian, Asian and European film and television cultures
• Earlier and contemporary popular Hollywood
• Contemporary television industries and practices
• Documentary film and television
• Race, gender and sexuality on screen
• Video practice.

Who will be teaching you?

Our teaching environment is welcoming and team-focused, with a united passion for film, television and new media culture. We host regular special guest speakers and events, such as book launches, talks from international scholars and screenings, as well as regular symposia and conferences.

We have excellent teaching and screening facilities and strong industry links, including partnerships with ACMI, Screen Australia and the Melbourne Women in Film Festival.
