You’ll gain an understanding of Jewish civilisation in its many aspects – language, literature, history, theology, philosophy, rabbinic, law, politics and sociology. Jewish studies is taught by the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation (ACJC), an interdisciplinary centre within Monash Arts whose mission is to research and teach the significance and evolution of Jewish culture and its contributions to the world.
ACJC is known for its global internships and overseas study trips to Israel, Europe and Rwanda. Our units can be studied through other areas of study such as history, religion and international studies, where they focus on three areas: Judaism and interreligious relations; Israel and the Middle East; and the Holocaust and genocide.
Jewish studies equips you with an understanding of Jewish civilisation from ancient times through the present day and fosters intercultural understanding. The required units will provide you with a foundational understanding of the Jewish experience in all its diversity, followed by more specialised electives that span different areas of study, including history, cultural studies, literature, cinema, politics, sociology, philosophy and theology.
The minor offers overseas units in the areas of Holocaust and Genocide Studies as well as opportunities for community engagement through internships and not-for-credit study of Yiddish language and culture.
