How to apply?

Step 1

Let us know

If you wish to participate in the Ciência sem Fronteiras program, you should register your interest with Monash University by contacting us at globalengagement@monash.edu.

This process only applies to academic staff or early career researchers who have recently completed their PhD. If you are a long-standing academic staff member you will need to apply for a different visa type.

Step 2

Seek supervisor or department support

You will need to contact a relevant supervisor in an academic department and seek their support. You can search for a researcher at a number of sites including: www.monash.edu.au/research/profiles or check Monash's fields of research at: www.monash.edu.au/research/capabilities/for

Step 3

Receive a formal invitation

Once the Academic Department has agreed to provide support, the Human Resource department will issue you with a formal invitation.

Step 4

Apply for funding from the sponsoring body in Brazil

Check in advance the closing dates, requirements, and procedures at: www.cienciasemfrteiras.gov.br

Step 5

Accept invitation to be nominated by Monash University

The visa nomination process will commence once you have signed the letter accepting Monash's invitation. The signed invitation can be returned to HR Operations via email and must include proof of health insurance and passport ID.

Step 6

Complete Visa Application

As part of the application process you will need to complete an application form and attach all necessary documentation. An Application for Training and Research Visa (pdf 651kb)form is available on the DIAC website.

6.1 Health Insurance

In order to be granted a Training and Research (Subclass 402) Visa- Occupational Trainee Stream, you will need to provide evidence that you have made adequate arrangements for health insurance for your visit, in the form of a letter or certificate from your health insurer.

6.2 Financial requirements

You will be required to provide evidence of your financial capacity to support yourself (This may include a scholarship letter, bank statements showing savings, and/or a letter from your financial institution stating your financial position.) You will need to demonstrate funds of approximately $360 AUD per week ($1560 AUD per month). Please note this figure will be higher if there are any dependents included in the application.

Acknowledgement of Unpaid Placement - Visa applicant form 1283 (pdf 49kb) will need to be lodged as evidence of the visa application if it is unpaid. (The name of the organisation and sponsor is Monash University).

Step 7

Receive visa approval

All completed documents are to be returned to HR-Immigration@monash.edu who will then submit to DIAC on your behalf.

Step 8

Upon arrival – Get your Visitor ID Card

Once the inviting Academic Department has completed and submitted a Confirmation of Commencement Visitor Form, a university SAP ID number will be forwarded to the inviting Department. The inviting Department can then apply for a Visitor ID card for you. This ID card will enable access to the internet and e-mail access for the term of the visit.
