Professor Rob Raven
Monash Sustainable Development Institute
Deputy Director - Research
Professor Raven joins MSDI from Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development and the Innovation Studies department of Utrecht University, The Netherlands, where he has held the role of designated chair and professor of ‘Institutions and Societal Transitions’. Prior to this Professor Raven worked as Associate Professor of sustainability transitions in a global context at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands.
Professor Raven’s interest is in understanding the dynamics and governance of sustainability transitions and socio-technical innovation. He has made major contributions to multi-level theories of transformative change, the notion of socio-technical experimentation and to the governance perspective of strategic niche management. His empirical work has covered energy and mobility transition processes in both Europe and Asia. He has co-authored over 50 scientific articles and two books on these topics and was editor of special issues in Research Policy, Technological Forecasting & Social Change and Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions.
In 2012 Professor Raven won the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST) Chris Freeman award for a significant collective contribution to the interaction of science and technology studies with the study of innovation. His current research agenda is focussed on analysis of transformative change in urban context such as smart eco-cities, with a key question of how socio-technical experimentation, institutional change and incumbent urban regimes co-produce the future of cities world-wide.
