Finding the perfect permanent position straight out of university can be tough. In a job market where graduates are many and positions are few, sometimes it's better for your long-term career to take short or fixed-term contract work over a sub-par permanent position.
Here are four reasons why.
1) You build diverse experience, fast
Contract work allows you to gain a lot of experience with different work environments in a relatively short amount of time. It might take someone working in permanent positions decades to work in as many jobs as someone that takes several contract jobs over the course of a year. When you're constantly changing who you work for, you learn how to deal with all sorts of people and get to know different ways of working that you may not have otherwise encountered.
2) You get the chance to network with a lot of people
One of the most important things in the professional world today is networking, especially for finding new positions. Not all jobs are advertised – the hidden job market is something that can only be tapped into if you have the right connections. Doing contract work is a great way to make these connections in the beginning of your career, because you'll be working for (and with) many more people than you would in a permanent position.
Prove your worth, and you could turn a temporary role into a permanent one.
3) A temp position can become permanent
There are some roles out there that you likely wouldn't be considered for as a graduate. A temporary contract position, however, can get your foot in the door. Prove your worth, and you could turn a temporary role into a permanent one.
4) You get to work in the industry you want to work in
A permanent position shouldn't come at the expense of working in your favoured industry. With contract work, you can build relevant experience while searching for a more long-term job. When permanent roles do become available in your desired industry or profession, it's better to come armed with experience in that field – even if it was on a temporary basis – over experience in a permanent role that's not relevant to the open position.
