In support of human rights
The Castan Centre has hosted many important international guests. The Dalai Lama visited on 13 June 2007 and spoke about Tibet, its history and customs, the historical and current relationship between Tibet, China and other countries, and the importance of the "Middle Way". The expert panel included social commentator Keith Suter, journalist Piers Akerman and academics Colin Mackerras and Bee Chen Goh.
Director of the Castan Centre, Professor Sarah Joseph, said there was a symbolic tie between the Dalai Lama and the Centre, as his Holiness had a collaborative relationship with the late Ron Castan, after whom the Centre is named.
