Professor Richard Selby Smith becomes first faculty dean
Professor Selby Smith
Professor Selby Smith was a moderate moderniser. He felt education should draw on a range of disciplines. Educational Psychology was one of the first subjects. Some of the early staff appointments were chemist Professor Peter Fensham and social psychologist Professor Ron Taft. Others came from sociology, history and mathematics.
By 1965 the number of Education students sored to over 100. In 1970, the Faculty had moved out of its cramped quarters in the Ming Wing and into its very own building. It was the first Education Faculty in Australia to have its own building.
