A library at the heart of campus
The university library began in makeshift quarters on the ground floor of the Science faculty. The Hargrave Library opened in 1962 but the Main Library, as it was long known, only in 1964. In 1994, its name was changed to the Sir Louis Matheson Library in honour of the University’s first vice-chancellor.
Over time, the library’s collections came to focus on humanities, social sciences, commerce and education, and includes several special collections.
