Monash marches with pride

31 January 2016

For the first time, Monash participated in the annual Midsumma Pride March, which recognises and celebrates Victoria’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) communities.

Led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner, Monash University staff and students marched down Fitzroy Street in St Kilda along with the biggest crowd in the event’s history.

Professor Gardner said participation in the march sent a strong message of support to the LGBTIQ members of our community.

“Monash is an inclusive university and we value the diversity among our staff and students,” Professor Gardner said.

The Monash contingent was coordinated by the Ally Network at Monash. The Ally Network takes a proactive stance against discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and/or intersex status. It promotes Monash as a safe space for individuals who are LGBTIQ.

Professor Margaret Gardner led the University in the March again in 2018, with an even bigger Monash presence.
