Pioneering paediatrics

29 March 2017

After construction began three years earlier, Monash Children’s Hospital opens its doors to its first patients. It becomes headquarters to the University’s newly established Department of Paediatrics.

A procedural skills laboratory, tutorial areas and surgical simulation centre are housed within a dedicated Monash University ‘zone’ for medical students.

Despite being the only hospital in Victoria to offer foetal surgery and thalassaemia treatment, the hospital is criticised for the absence of a paediatric emergency department – something Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews promises to rectify in the following month’s state budget.

The University’s researchers are embedded into the hospital’s fabric.
