The Student Evaluation of Teaching and Units (SETU) is a way we get to hear from students about their experience of learning within a unit. The responses provide the University with a broad indicator of students' satisfaction with teaching and the student learning journey.
Monash University is committed to providing students with an outstanding learning experience that is student-centred in its approach. Accordingly, it is essential that students are involved in and their feedback informs curriculum development and review within schools, faculties and at a University level. The data may be used by faculty and other University staff within contexts such as: unit enhancement, strategic planning, course and unit review, staff professional development as well as staff promotion, continuation of employment and recruitment.
The collection of institutional survey data is an integral, normal and important aspect of the functioning of the University. Participation is voluntary and not subject to coercion - however teaching staff are encouraged to promote SETU to their students and to provide opportunities to students in submitting a response.
The SETU login page will display all units that you are currently enrolled in and which of those are currently open for evaluation. Students must be officially enrolled in a unit in order to have access to evaluate it.
The decision of which units get evaluated each semester is determined by the faculty. Learning and Teaching Quality Procedure (Student Evaluation of Teaching and Units Procedures) states that "Every unit offering and all staff teaching in that offering will be evaluated in each SETU survey period". Different groups of units may have different survey periods and this will determine whether a unit is available for evaluation through SETU at a particular point in time. You will be notified via email once the survey period commences for your unit/s, with weekly email reminders until the survey is completed or until the survey period concludes.
You need to login to complete surveys so survey software can display the appropriate evaluations according to your enrolment. It is also required to ensure that we can remind the appropriate students who have not yet submitted an evaluation to complete their surveys.
SETU results are only released to faculties and staff following the finalisation of semester results. Students should refrain from self-identifying themselves through their comments in order to assure their anonymity.
Yes - by completing and submitting an evaluation you are automatically entered into the SETU prize draw. The anonymity of survey responses is maintained during the prize draw process. Further details are available by referring to the prize terms and conditions. If you are eligible to evaluate more than one unit in a semester, multiple completed evaluations will increase your chances of winning. For example - completing 4 evaluations will give you 4 chances in the prize draw.
Login to the SETU survey directly from the SETU login page, or click on the SETU link in emails received from the University. You will receive emails to your student email account at the commencement of each survey period, followed by weekly reminders as long as you still have outstanding evaluations to complete. You can complete your evaluations anytime and anywhere. Some teaching staff may elect to allocate class time during the survey period for students to complete their SETU.
Faculties are responsible for determining which teaching staff are available for evaluation for a particular unit. Teaching staff can also opt-in to be evaluated. When you click on a unit to evaluate it, you will be presented with a screen which displays a list of teaching staff (if any) that are available for evaluation. If staff are available for evaluation, you can select which staff you wish to evaluate and then the teaching evaluation questions will be repeated for each of your selections.
Once you submit your evaluation you cannot go back and make changes or additions. If you have incorrectly evaluated a unit (i.e. mistaken it for another unit) or evaluated an incorrect staff member you can contact us and request that we reset your evaluation for that unit - as long as you contact us within 3 days of the survey period closing date. This will delete your original response and enable you to resubmit a new response.
If you wish to review your evaluation, this should be done prior to submission of the survey - as once the survey is submitted there is no further access to the evaluation for that unit. You have the right to access personal information that Monash University holds about you, subject to any exceptions in relevant legislation. If you wish to seek access to your personal information or inquire about the handling of your personal information, please contact the Monash University Privacy Officer by email at email@example.com.
SETU is designed to collect feedback whilst the unit is still running to ensure that your feedback is not related to your marks or your experience of your final assessment. Surveys are timed towards the end of the teaching period in order to enable your feedback to be as rich as possible.
Your written comments are the most valuable and important information collected through SETU. They help educators, faculties and management work out what to do in response to the results for the questions that have been asked. Therefore we welcome constructive feedback on the 'best aspects' of a unit and 'those in need of improvement'.
It is recognised that some student feedback may be constructively critical but it needs to remain professional. Where feedback is deemed to be in breach of relevant University policies through inappropriate references to an educator's racial, ethnic, political, religious origin, gender, membership affiliations, sexual orientation, appropriate action will be initiated in accordance with the policies.
No - unfortunately survey responses cannot be accepted after the survey has closed. If you wish to provide feedback outside of SETU, contact your unit or course coordinator directly or alternatively providing your feedback to the appropriate faculty contact.
SETU results are only available following semester result release. Prior to this only unit level response rates are available to faculties and teaching staff. Therefore your survey responses cannot influence your marks in a unit.
