Australian Perspecta is a biennial survey of Australian contemporary art initiated by the Art Gallery of New South Wales with the assistance of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council.

The major show for 1983 was held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) from 12 May to 26 June. Three separate components of the exhibition toured Australia over the following year: painting, works on paper, and photography.

The Exhibition Gallery at Monash University was the first venue for the painting component, with Heide Park and the AGNSW showing the other two components concurrently.

Monash hosting an exhibition such as Perspecta exemplified its strong commitment to Australian contemporary art, as was already well documented in the Monash University Collection and in previous past exhibitions.

Two of the works on tour were from the Monash University Collection and a number of other pieces were shown at Monash in 1982 as part of the Young Melbourne Painters exhibition.
