About the exhibition
Curated by artist David H. Thomas (who worked at MUMA and the Monash University Gallery since 1998 as Museum Officer), Geometer was presented at the Switchback Gallery, on Monash University’s Gippsland campus. It brought together nine artists, each of whom engaged with the southernmost tip of mainland Australia – Wilsons Promontory. Responding variously to the landscape, history and mythology, geology, biology and the weather, works in the exhibition created a portrait in conversation about this distinctive place. As Thomas explained, the geometer moth, which is found in Wilsons Promontory, ‘derives its name from its walking style in its caterpillar stage, which seems to be measuring ground as it moves’. This connection both to a local species and the act of measuring through movement, informed the title and starting point for the exhibition concept.
