Whether it is the meandering line of a pen, a drip of oil paint, a deeply etched mark, or a performative bodily gesture, materials offer traces of the creative process and evidence of an artist’s thoughts, explorations and struggles. Such traces can imbue an object with a richness and honesty, allowing the viewer an insight into the act of making. In bringing together works representative of a wide range of media and stylistic concerns, this exhibition explored ways in which artists have revelled in the materiality of their chosen mediums. Featuring the work of Tim McMonagle, Aida Tomescu, John Nixon, Stephen Bush and Adam Pyett among others, it examined the way in which process and materials can be central to the purpose and meaning of an artwork.
