About the exhibition
In 1975, the new Exhibitions Gallery opened on the seventh floor of the Menzies Building at Clayton with a selection of works from the Monash University Collection brought together by curator Grazia Gunn. In the same year, the newly established Department of Visual Arts began undergraduate teaching, with ‘teaching exhibitions’ presented within the Exhibitions Gallery program to enhance and augment teaching in the department. At this time, the Collection numbered approximately 250 works of art representative of Australian art since the foundation of the university in 1961. Gunn selected thirty-six works from the Collection, showcasing its strengths in contemporary and recent Australian painting.
