About the exhibition
The Caulfield Institute of Technology was established in 1968, later becoming the Chisholm Institute of Technology and merging with Monash University in 1990. At the time of this exhibition in 1975, it boasted a large fine art teaching team of mostly younger exhibiting artists, or as Patrick McCaughey put it, ‘artists who teach rather than teachers who dabble’. McCaughey, head of the newly minted Visual Art Department at Monash University in Clayton, established the Exhibition Gallery in 1975 and was interested in bridging what he saw as the traditional divide between the ‘University (the ivory tower) and the Art School (the tech )’. This group exhibition of ten artists drawn from the teaching staff at the Caulfield Institute of Technology was a step towards building connections between practising artists and academics.
