About the exhibition
This solo exhibition featured twenty-one paintings by Alun Leach-Jones, a leading figure in Australian abstraction. The exhibition was dominated by ‘Noumenon’ works carrying the generic title Leach-Jones gave to all his paintings from 1966 to 1972. Often following the structure of a circle within a square, with an intricate, linear pattern within the circle, the early Noumenon works had graphic quality, both decorative and iconographic. The complex visual and philosophical play of these paintings set the ground for the precise hard-edge, energetic style Leach-Jones would pursue in following decades.
