About the exhibition
In 1968 Peter Booth had been one of the younger artists featured in the landmark exhibition The Field at the National Gallery of Victoria, showing his large-scale, hard-edge ‘block’ paintings. The period traced in Peter Booth: Paintings and Drawings 1968–1976 was pivotal for the artist and included his ‘doorway’ series. During this time, Booth began keeping a dream diary and moved between vivid abstractions and monstrous figurative works—both approaches equally intense in application of colour and paint, with the reduction of details superfluous to the artist’s goal ‘to record a deeper emotional state’ .
