The Rise of Modern Architecture

Dates:
5 – 20 August 1976

Curator:
Grazia Gunn

Location:
Exhibition Gallery
Monash University, Clayton Campus

About the exhibition
The Exhibition Gallery was launched in tandem with the new Department of Visual Arts, both ensconced on the seventh floor of the Menzies Building; the program was envisaged to be a tangible resource for teaching. Between 1975 and 1983, the gallery mounted a series of what was referred to as ‘Teaching Exhibitions’, which were directly related to specific courses taught in the department, particularly the history of art and architecture. Curator Grazia Gunn described these at the time as a ‘new type of documentary exhibition’, generally taking the form of ‘large-scale photographic displays’, with associated seminars and lectures taking place in the gallery. With the photographs processed in-house, certain teaching exhibitions including The Rise of Modern Architecture, were reprised over consecutive years as related subjects continued to be offered.
