About the exhibition
Lesley Dumbrell spent most of 1977 as artist-in-residence in the Department of Visual Arts (the third in this program, following Peter Tyndall in 1975 and John Davis in 1976). Dumbrell produced alarge number  of works during her residency, and the exhibition included Spangle, 1977, alongside paintings from the previous decade, many of which explored tonal variations in the colour red. Through geometric patterns, light and shadow, and tightly repeating lines and forms, Dumbrell created dazzling optical vibrations in her paintings. A generous selection of studies included in the exhibition, such as smaller works on paper, provided insight into the artist’s process.
