About the exhibition
This exchange of exhibitions between the University of Melbourne and Monash University highlighted the distinct histories and strengths of each university’s collection. Selected works from the Monash University Collection were displayed at the Melbourne University Gallery and reflected the nature of the young collection having been built up over twenty years, primarily on the advice of an advisory committee. The Collection placed emphasis on the works of younger artists, mostly Victorian, who emerged during the 1960s. In contrast, works from the University of Melbourne Art Collection shown at the Exhibition Gallery during this exchange emphasised earlier periods of Australian art, namely tonal painting and early modernism, that formed the core of a collection more than a hundred years in the making. Together, the two exhibitions were intended to trace the evolution of Australian art and argue for the historical significance of institutional art collections.
