About the exhibition
Young Melbourne Painters marked a shift in attitude from late modernism to postmodernism with a selection of paintings and drawings by six artists, all made within the previous two years. In the context of a multiplication of postmodern approaches emerging internationally, painting and figuration were seen to have ‘re-entered the arena’  of critical and artistic discourse. According to curator Memory Holloway, artists were again exploring ‘narrative, personal and cultural myths, allegory and local and national styles of the past’,  with a bold and assertive style.
