About the exhibition
To mark the opening of the new Monash University Gallery, this major survey showcased seventy works by renowned Australian artist Russel Drysdale (1912–1981). The first full-scale exhibition of Drysdale's work in Victoria, it predominantly featured paintings, alongside a selection of significant drawings, all united by the artist’s enduring vision of rural and outback life.

Writing for the exhibition’s catalogue, celebrated academic and author Margaret Plant, Professor of Visual Arts at Monash University between 1982 and 1996 and Emeritus Professor from 1996, described Drysdale’s key artistic achievement and lasting legacy as establishing ‘the intrigue of the space of Australia.’

The exhibition was held in the newly established Drysdale Gallery—a dedicated space designed to house the Monash University Collection .
