About the exhibition
This retrospective exhibition of paintings by Dale Hickey marked the first opportunity for a comprehensive overview of the artist’s work since his 1976 project at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Having come to public attention through the seminal exhibition The Field at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1968, Hickey initially gained recognition for his use of op-art effects and hard-edge abstraction. However, he did not remain confined to this Minimalist idiom for long; his practice soon evolved, becoming increasingly anchored in Conceptualism and Process art. Spanning the full breadth of Hickey’s artistic development, the exhibition also reflected his engagement with traditional visual tropes such as the still life, landscape, and scenes from the artist’s studio. As noted in the accompanying media release, the exhibition provided ‘an absorbing background to the work of this intriguing artist.’
