About the exhibition
Drawn almost exclusively from private collections in Australia, this exhibition traced the evolution of American Pop artist Andy Warhol’s career through three distinct phases: his early graphic work of the 1950s—including advertising commissions and illustrations for Harper’s Bazaar; the Pop Art era of the ’60s; and, from the early ’70s, his so-called ‘corporate art’ phase under the banner of Warhol Enterprises Inc.

A key focus of the exhibition was Warhol’s pioneering use of silkscreen printing. Featuring prints from the ’60s to the ’80s, including iconic subjects such as Jacqueline Kennedy III (Jackie III) , 1966, Marliyn Monroe , 1967, Flowers, 1970 and Electric Chairs, 1971, the exhibition highlighted how Warhol transformed screenprinting—once relegated to commercial reproduction—into a widely accepted medium for fine art.
