About the exhibition
Conceived as an event to support and celebrate excellence in contemporary visual practice among emerging artists, this inaugural prize exhibition featured work produced in 1995 by twenty-one young artists from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. Selected by the Gallery’s curatorial team, the participants represented a broad spectrum of contemporary ideas and media.

Two works from the exhibition were acquired for the Monash University Collection. Callum Morton's 24 Hrs, 1995, is a sculptural installation modelled after a generic convenience store awning—an urban fragment removed from the street and recontextualised within the gallery space. Mathew Jones’s Big Painting (RIOT #1: DEAD), a synthetic polymer paint on canvas work composed of four conjoined panels (two stacked upon two), spells out the word ‘DEAD’. Positioned as a site of relation, agitation and refusal, the work explores how queerness is both refuted and appropriated.
