ArtArt: Selected Works from the Faculty of Art and Design, Monash University

Dates:
7 – 25 November 2000

Location:
Monash University Gallery
Monash University, Clayton Campus

About the exhibition
A survey exhibition of current Monash University students, this diverse presentation brought together works by twenty-one emerging artists across undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The exhibition represented a broad cross-section of disciplines taught within the Faculty of Art and Design, including painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, tapestry, photography, glass, ceramics and video.

Curated by Nadine Sawyer, herself a Master’s student in painting at Monash, the exhibition embraced the wide-ranging sensibilities of its contributors: ‘Diverse psychologies are inevitable in a student end-of-year show. Each artist has had time within the academic calendar’s construct to wander aesthetically.’

Exhibition highlights included David Fitzsimmon’s kinetic installation featuring two domestic washing machines oscillating and vibrating within the gallery space; Zai Biao Kuang’s paintings of bathrooms; Emma Brook’s plaster casts of takeaway food containers; and Brad Haylock’s short film, Safe New World, 2000,  documenting human behaviour in supermarket aisles.
