About the exhibition
This exhibition featured works selected from the Monash University Collection to highlight the artists exploring multiple strands of personal, social and national identity and their engagement with the issues central to modern Australian life. Presenting a broad selection of works from contemporary Australia, the exhibition revealed complex histories, encouraging audiences to question dominant political narratives and to consider the limits of certain forms of nationalism.

Key thematic approaches included the subversion of visual stereotypes by Aboriginal artists (Destiny Deacon, Leah King-Smith, Judy Watson); the use of quotation to expose the hypocrisies embedded in colonial art (Stephen Bush, Gordon Bennett, Ian Burn); and engagement with Australia’s cultural diversity and diasporic experiences (Kate Beynon, Neil Emmerson, Constanze Zikos, Savanhdary Vongpoothorn).
