ART+FILM Screening at ACMI: DDR/DDR by Amie Siegel

Monday 26 September 2016, 6pm
ACMI, Federation Square
Free entry
Duration: 135 mins

The Australian premiere of Amie Siegel’s feature film essay DDR/DDR 2008 is presented by MUMA in partnership with ACMI.

DDR/DDR is a non-fiction investigation of cultural memory in former East Germany. Siegel weaves a history of surveillance techniques and technologies through interviews with psychoanalysts, former Stasi employees and a former East German group of Native American sympathisers, excerpts  from surveillance  videos and GDR feature films, and lingering tracking shots of Stasi offices. Interrogating film itself as a tool of observation, surveillance and propaganda, Siegel does not exempt herself, or her art, from film’s capacity for exposing and being exposed.

This screening of DDR/DDR coincides with the Australian premiere of Amie Siegel’s Double Negative in the group exhibition Life inside an Image at Monash University Museum of Art.

A Q&A with Amie Siegel via Skype will follow the screening.
