During MUMA’s international group exhibition Shapes of Knowledge, Asia Art Archive (AAA) visited Melbourne to present a series of lectures that drew on their research into three art schools in Asia that shaped art education in the postwar years.

Their second MADA Art Forum lecture was presented by Anthony Yung, one of Asia Art Archive’s senior researchers based in Shanghai. Yung presented a talk that introduced the work of AAA and focused on the history of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, China and its evolution from a site for the production of political propaganda in the 1950s to one of China’s most experimental art schools of the 1980s.

Anthony Yung is a senior researcher at Asia Art Archive, specialising in China’s related research projects. He managed AAA’s major research project Materials of the Future: Documenting Contemporary Chinese Art from 1980–1990, which produced one hundred interviews with artists, critics, scholars and other participants and collected a large amount of research materials about Chinese contemporary art from the late 1970s to early 1990s.

Asia Art Archive (AAA) is an independent, non-profit organisation co-founded by Claire Hsu and Johnson Chang in Hong Kong in 2000. It functions as a catalyst for the collection, creation and sharing of knowledge of the multiple recent histories of art in the Asian region. AAA builds tools and communities to collectively expand knowledge through research, residency and educational programs. It hosts one of the most extensive archives of material on Asian art, which is freely accessible from its website and onsite library in Hong Kong. A team of over forty individuals are responsible for AAA’s collection, research activities, programming and operations.

Asia Art Archive participated in Shapes of Knowledge at Monash University Museum of Art, 9 February – 13 April 2019.
