Boiler Room Lecture: Jalal Toufic – Which Is the More Difficult in the Christian Era: to Resurrect or to Bury?

Monash University Museum of Art in partnership with Monash Art Design & Architecture are pleased to co-present a keynote lecture by Lebanese artist, writer and thinker Jalal Toufic, whose influence in the Beirut artistic community over the past two decades has been immense. The lecture will be introduced by Callum Morton, MADA Head of Department, and will be followed by a screening of Toufic's video Attempt 137 to Map the Drive (7 minutes, 2011; made in collaboration with Graziella Rizkallah Toufic).

Jalal Toufic is a thinker and a mortal to death. He was born in 1962 in Beirut or Baghdad and died before dying in 1989 in Evanston, Illinois. His books, many of which were published by Forthcoming Books, are available for download as PDF files at his website: www.jalaltoufic.com. He was most recently a participant in the Sharjah Biennial 11, the 9th Shanghai Biennale, Documenta 13, and A History: Art, Architecture, and Design, from the 1980s Until Today at the Centre Pompidou. In 2011, he was a guest of the Artists-in-Berlin Program of the DAAD; and in 2013–2014, he and Anton Vidokle led Ashkal Alwan’s third edition of Home Workspace Program, based in Beirut.
