Our group is focused on antimicrobial systems pharmacology and the discovery of novel antibiotics to combat Gram-negative ‘superbugs’.

We're part of the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, a member of the Infection and Cardiovascular Disease Programs and the Department of Microbiology.

Our research

Antibiotics have saved millions of lives over the last century worldwide. Unfortunately, antibiotic resistance presents a significant global medical challenge. Our research aims to optimise antimicrobial use in patients, in particular polymyxins and their combinations; elucidate the mechanisms of antibacterial activity, resistance and toxicity using a systems pharmacology approach; optimise novel, safer polymyxin combination therapy; and develop new-generation polymyxins and novel phage therapy against Gram-negative ‘superbugs’.

  • Optimising clinical use of polymyxins and their synergistic combinations using pharmacokinetics/ pharmacodynamics/toxicodynamics (PK/PD/TD) and systems pharmacology

  • Mechanisms of antibacterial activity, resistance, and toxicity of polymyxins using a multi-disciplinary approach

  • Virtual bacterial cells using systems pharmacology and computational biology

  • Development of new-generation polymyxins, novel formulations, and innovative phage therapy against multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa, A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae
