About Dr Hsin-Hui Shen
Dr Shen is an NHMRC Career Development Fellow at Monash University. She completed her PhD in Physical Chemistry at Oxford University in 2008. Following that, she commenced her postdoctoral research at CSIRO (2008-2011) and received the ARC Super Science Research Fellowship at Monash University (2012-2015). Dr Shen is a biophysical scientist who can transit between two diverse worlds of biophysics and microbial infections with ease. This is evidenced by her joint appointment with the Biomedicine Discovery Institute, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Faculty of Engineering, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Monash University. She has pioneered new methods to study physicochemical properties of protein complexes in model membranes, as evidenced by seminal publications in high impact journals (Science, Nature Microbiology, Nature Communications; Biomaterials, PNAS).
Our research
Current projects
- Pore-forming toxins of Staphylococcus aureus: imaging assembly, pore formation and killing
- Integrative systems pharmacology, neutron reflectometry and molecular dynamics approaches to unravelling the interaction between polymyxins and bacterial membranes
- Antibiotic Resistance and Host Immune Evasion in Staphylococcus aureus
- Elucidation of membrane protein biosynthesis and membrane environment in bacteria.
- New insights in treatment and diagnosis of glaucoma.

Research activities
- We aim to develop novel Cyclodextrin based antimicrobial polymers to combat Multi Drug Resistant bacteria infection.

2. Our lab focuses on the targeted therapy of the ophthalmic diseases via intraocular drug delivery.

ANX-PS-Phy cubosomes could be applied as a safe and robust drug delivery vehicle for targeting the damaged, apoptotic cells in ocular diseases.
Techniques/expertise
Nanotechnology, Biophysics, and Protein biogenesis
