‘Courtyard Apartments in Claymore’ takes advantage of the natural environment in Claymore, NSW and offers an alternative medium-density dwelling model for the renewal of a former public housing estate. The courtyard apartment typology allows for flexible siting arrangements, working around the existing vegetation that was deliberately retained, while creating new edges to the street, within the courtyard and between buildings.

Iso View - NW

The courtyard apartments are designed to provide a range of public, shared and private open spaces that encourages a stronger interaction between nature and people in Claymore.

Ground Floor Plan

Opportunities to open up and close down ground level spaces around the courtyard enables through-site circulation and street activation, while maintaining privacy for residents.

Level 2 Plan

The project focused on tenure diversity as well as dwelling diversity. With each type targeted towards a specific user group, which would be young families, and single people in Claymore.

Roof Plan

Access to the natural environment is considered vertically throughout the building, culminating in shared rooftop gardens for residents.

Sectional Perspective

The folding timber facade system animates the internal face of the courtyard, allowing residents to control the solar gains and privacy. Besides, the project sources its brick from the demolished house that was on the site.
