The Inclusive City

The Inclusive City planning studio focuses on social and community planning and design issues with the primary challenge of creating people-centred cities. The year's studio focuses on the social, spatial, and economic dimensions of inclusive city planning through the lens of industrial lands and their surrounding communities. Can we plan new industrial estates to be more economically inclusive and environmentally sustainable? How can planning mechanisms for land use, built form and environmental performance help adapt industrial areas to support ongoing changes in employment? How can planners create more affordable and diverse spaces for industrial activity, suited to a range of existing and emerging employment types? To engage with these questions students have undertaken research into inner, middle and outer ring industrial sites in Melbourne (Arden, Sunshine North, East Preston, Mt Atkinson-Tarneit Plains) with diverse challenges and opportunities. Building on site investigations and on case study examples of planning for industrial activities, students have prepared “inclusive industrial futures” proposals focusing on how to change policy contexts to achieve selected inclusionary outcomes through an industrial lens.
